RESUMEN

Cuprous complex scintillators show promise for X-ray detection with abundant raw materials, diverse luminescent mechanisms, and adjustable structures. However, their synthesis typically requires a significant amount of organic solvents, which conflict with green chemistry principles. Herein, we present the synthesis of two high-performance cuprous complex scintillators using a simple mechanochemical method for the first time, namely [CuI(PPh3)2R] (R = 4-phenylpyridine hydroiodide (PH, Cu-1) and 4-(4-bromophenyl)pyridine hydroiodide (PH-Br, Cu-2). Both materials demonstrated remarkable scintillation performances, exhibiting radioluminescence (RL) intensities 1.52 times (Cu-1) and 2.52 times (Cu-2) greater than those of Bi4Ge3O12 (BGO), respectively. Compared to Cu-1, the enhanced RL performance of Cu-2 can be ascribed to its elevated quantum yield of 51.54%, significantly surpassing that of Cu-1 at 37.75%. This excellent luminescent performance is derived from the introduction of PH-Br, providing a more diverse array of intermolecular interactions that effectively constrain molecular vibration and rotation, further suppressing the nonradiative transition process. Furthermore, Cu-2 powder can be prepared into scintillator film with excellent X-ray imaging capabilities. This work establishes a pathway for the rapid, eco-friendly, and cost-effective synthesis of high-performance cuprous complex scintillators.

Essential hypertension involves complex cardiovascular regulation. The autonomic nervous system function fluctuates throughout the sleep-wake cycle and changes with advancing age. However, the precise role of the autonomic nervous system in the development of hypertension during aging remains unclear. In this study, we characterized autonomic function during the sleep-wake cycle in different age groups with essential hypertension. This study included 97 men (53 with and 44 without hypertension) aged 30-79 years. They were stratified by age into young (< 40 years), middle-aged (40-59 years), and older (60-79 years) groups. Polysomnography and blood pressure data were recorded for 2 min before and during an hour-long nap. Autonomic function was assessed by measuring heart rate variability and blood pressure variability. Data were analyzed using t tests, correlation analyses, and two-way analysis of variance. During nonrapid eye movement (nREM), a main effect of age was observed on cardiac parasympathetic measures and baroreflex sensitivity (BRS), with the highest and lowest levels noted in the younger and older groups, respectively. The coefficients of the correlations between these measures and age were lower in patients with hypertension than in normotensive controls. The BRS of young patients with hypertension was similar to that of their middle-aged and older counterparts. However, cardiac sympathetic activity was significantly higher (p = 0.023) and BRS was significantly lower (p = 0.022) in the hypertension group than in the control group. During wakefulness, the results were similar although some of the above findings were absent. Autonomic imbalance, particularly impaired baroreflex, plays a more significant role in younger patients with hypertension. The nREM stage may be suitable for gaining insights into the relevant mechanisms.

Objectives: This study mainly uses machine learning (ML) to make predictions by inputting features during training and inference. The method of feature selection is an important factor affecting the accuracy of ML models, and the process includes data extraction, which is the collection of all data required for ML. It also needs to import the concept of feature engineering, namely, this study needs to label the raw data of the cardiac ultrasound dataset with one or more meaningful and informative labels so that the ML model can learn from it and predict more accurate target values. Therefore, this study will enhance the strategies of feature selection methods from the raw dataset, as well as the issue of data scrubbing. Methods: In this study, the ultrasound dataset was cleaned and critical features were selected through data standardization, normalization, and missing features imputation in the field of feature engineering. The aim of data scrubbing was to retain and select critical features of the echocardiogram dataset while making the prediction of the ML algorithm more accurate. Results: This paper mainly utilizes commonly used methods in feature engineering and finally selects four important feature values. With the ML algorithms available on the Azure platform, namely, Random Forest and CatBoost, a Voting Ensemble method is used as the training algorithm, and this study also uses visual tools to gain a clearer understanding of the raw data and to improve the accuracy of the predictive model. Conclusion: This paper emphasizes feature engineering, specifically on the cleaning and analysis of missing values in the raw dataset of echocardiography and the identification of important critical features in the raw dataset. The Azure platform is used to predict patients with a history of heart disease (individuals who have been under surveillance in the past three years and those who haven't). Through data scrubbing and preprocessing methods in feature engineering, the model can more accurately predict the future occurrence of heart disease in patients.

Mimics of the complex flavonol glycoside montbretin A in which a flavonol moiety is coupled to a caffeic acid via partially peptidic linkers have proved to be potent inhibitors of human pancreatic alpha-amylase with potential as therapeutics for control of blood glucose levels. After exploring optimal linker length, a synthetic route to a version with a branched linker was devised based on the structure of the enzyme/inhibitor complex. The resultant branched inhibitors were shown to retain nanomolar potency even when decorated with polymers as a means of modifying solubility. Similar improvements, along with nanomolar affinity, could also be achieved through conjugation to cyclodextrins which have the potential to bind to starch binding sites found on the surface of human amylase. Incorporation of a conjugatable branch into this unusual pharmacophore thereby affords considerable flexibility for further modifications to improve pharmacokinetic behaviour or as a site for attachment of capture tags or fluorophores.

Xanthine oxidoreductase (XOR) and uric acid transporter 1 (URAT1) are involved in the production and reabsorption of uric acid, respectively. However, the currently available individual XOR- or URAT1-targeted drugs have limited efficacy. Thus, strategies for combining XOR inhibitors with uricosuric drugs have been developed. Previous virtual screening identified Compounds 1-5 as hits for the potential dual inhibition of XOR/URAT1. Nevertheless, in vitro experiments yielded unsatisfactory results. The first round of optimization work on those hits was performed, and two series of compounds were designed and synthesized. Compounds of the A series exerted moderate inhibitory effects on URAT1, but extremely weak inhibitory effects on XOR. Compounds of the B series exerted strong inhibitory effects on both XOR and URAT1. B5 exhibited the greatest inhibitory activity, with similar inhibitory effects on XOR and URAT1. The half maximal inhibitory concentration (IC50 ) of XOR was 0.012 ± 0.001 µM, equivalent to that of febuxostat (IC50 = 0.010 ± 0.001 µM). The IC50 of URAT1 was 30.24 ± 3.46 µM, equivalent to that of benzbromarone (IC50 = 24.89 ± 7.53 µM). Through this optimization, the in vitro activity of most compounds of the A and B series against XOR and URAT1 was significantly improved versus that of the hits. Compound B5 should be further investigated.

Background: Predicting physical function upon discharge among hospitalized older adults is important. This study has aimed to develop a prediction model of physical function upon discharge through use of a machine learning algorithm using electronic health records (EHRs) and comprehensive geriatrics assessments (CGAs) among hospitalized older adults in Taiwan. Methods: Data was retrieved from the clinical database of a tertiary medical center in central Taiwan. Older adults admitted to the acute geriatric unit during the period from January 2012 to December 2018 were included for analysis, while those with missing data were excluded. From data of the EHRs and CGAs, a total of 52 clinical features were input for model building. We used 3 different machine learning algorithms, XGBoost, random forest and logistic regression. Results: In total, 1,755 older adults were included in final analysis, with a mean age of 80.68 years. For linear models on physical function upon discharge, the accuracy of prediction was 87% for XGBoost, 85% for random forest, and 32% for logistic regression. For classification models on physical function upon discharge, the accuracy for random forest, logistic regression and XGBoost were 94, 92 and 92%, respectively. The auROC reached 98% for XGBoost and random forest, while logistic regression had an auROC of 97%. The top 3 features of importance were activity of daily living (ADL) at baseline, ADL during admission, and mini nutritional status (MNA) during admission. Conclusion: The results showed that physical function upon discharge among hospitalized older adults can be predicted accurately during admission through use of a machine learning model with data taken from EHRs and CGAs.

Synaptic devices that mimic biological synapses are considered as promising candidates for brain-inspired devices, offering the functionalities in neuromorphic computing. However, modulation of emerging optoelectronic synaptic devices has rarely been reported. Herein, a semiconductive ternary hybrid heterostructure is prepared with a D-D'-A configuration by introducing polyoxometalate (POM) as an additional electroactive donor (D') into a metalloviologen-based D-A framework. The obtained material features an unprecedented porous 8-connected bcu-net that accommodates nanoscale [α-SiW12 O40 ]4- counterions, displaying uncommon optoelectronic responses. Besides, the fabricated synaptic device based on this material can achieve dual-modulation of synaptic plasticity due to the synergetic effect of electron reservoir POM and photoinduced electron transfer. And it can successfully simulate learning and memory processes similar to those in biological systems. The result provides a facile and effective strategy to customize multi-modality artificial synapses in the field of crystal engineering, which opens a new direction for developing high-performance neuromorphic devices.

From traditionally handmade items to the ability of people to use machines to process and even to human-robot collaboration, there are many risks. Traditional manual lathes and milling machines, sophisticated robotic arms, and computer numerical control (CNC) operations are quite dangerous. To ensure the safety of workers in automated factories, a novel and efficient warning-range algorithm is proposed to determine whether a person is in the warning range, introducing YOLOv4 tiny-object detection algorithms to improve the accuracy of determining objects. The results are displayed on a stack light and sent through an M-JPEG streaming server so that the detected image can be displayed through the browser. According to the experimental results of this system installed on a robotic arm workstation, it is proved that it can ensure recognition reaches 97%. When a person enters the dangerous range of the working robotic arm, the arm can be stopped within about 50 ms, which will effectively improve the safety of its use.

This research combines the application of artificial intelligence in the production equipment fault monitoring of aerospace components. It detects three-phase current abnormalities in large hot-pressing furnaces through smart meters and provides early preventive maintenance. Different anomalies are classified, and a suitable monitoring process algorithm is proposed to improve the overall monitoring quality, accuracy, and stability by applying AI. We also designed a system to present the heater's power consumption and the hot-pressing furnace's fan and visualize the process. Combining artificial intelligence with the experience and technology of professional technicians and researchers to detect and proactively grasp the health of the hot-pressing furnace equipment improves the shortcomings of previous expert systems, achieves long-term stability, and reduces costs. The complete algorithm introduces a model corresponding to the actual production environment, with the best model result being XGBoost with an accuracy of 0.97.

Aqueous Zn-ion batteries (AZIBs) and Zn-ion hybrid supercapacitors (AZHSCs) are considered promising energy-storage alternatives to Li-ion batteries due to the attractive merits of low-price and high-safety. However, the lack of suitable cathode materials always hinders their large-scale application. Herein, amorphous K-buserite microspheres (denoted as K-MnOx ) are reported as cathode materials for both AZIBs and AZHSCs, and the energy-storage mechanism is systematically revealed. It is found that K-MnOx is composed of rich amorphous K-buserite units, which can irreversibly be transformed into amorphous Zn-buserite units in the first discharge cycle. Innovatively, the transformed Zn-buserite acts as active materials in the following cycles and is highly active/stable for fast Zn-diffusion and superhigh pseudocapacitance, enabling the achievement of high-efficiency energy storage. In the AZIBs, K-MnOx delivers 306 mAh g-1 after 100 cycles at 0.1 A g-1 with 102% capacity retention, while in the AZHSCs, it shows 515.0/116.0 F g-1 at 0.15/20.0 A g-1 with 92.9% capacitance retention at 5.0 A g-1 after 20 000 cycles. Besides, the power/energy density of AZHSCs device can reach up to 16.94 kW kg-1 (at 20 A g-1 )/206.7 Wh kg-1 (at 0.15 A g-1 ). This work may provide some references for designing next-generation aqueous energy-storage devices with high energy/power density.

Directional asymmetry indicates a unidirectional deviation from perfect bilateral symmetry, which was rarely examined in the inner organs of the teleost (Teleostei) compared to external traits. This study examines the directional asymmetry in the gonad length of 20 species of moray eels (Muraenidae) and two outgroup species with 2959 individuals. We tested three hypotheses: (1) moray eel species did not exhibit directional asymmetry in the gonad length; (2) the directional asymmetry pattern was the same for all selected species; (3) the directional asymmetry was not related to the major habitat types, depth and size classes, and taxonomic closeness of the species. Moray eels were generally "right-gonadal", the right gonad length being constantly and significantly longer than the left one in all studied Muraenidae species. The degree of asymmetry varied among species and was not significantly related to taxonomic closeness. The habitat types, depth, and size classes had intermingled effects on observed asymmetry without a clear correspondence. The directional asymmetry in the gonad length is a unique and widely occurring phenomenon in the Family Muraenidae, which was likely a by-product in the evolutionary history without significant disadvantage in survival.

Sialic acids are key mediators of cell function, particularly with regard to cellular interactions with the surrounding environment. Reagents that modulate the display of specific sialyl glycoforms at the cell surface would be useful biochemical tools and potentially allow for therapeutic intervention in numerous challenging chronic diseases. While multiple strategies are being explored for the control of cell surface sialosides, none that shows high selectivity between sialyltransferases or that targets a specific sialyl glycoform has yet to emerge. Here, we describe a strategy to block the formation of α2,8-linked sialic acid chains (oligo- and polysialic acid) through the use of 8-keto-sialic acid as a chain-terminating metabolic inhibitor that, if incorporated, cannot be elongated. 8-Keto-sialic acid is nontoxic at effective concentrations and serves to block polysialic acid synthesis in cancer cell lines and primary immune cells, with minimal effects on other sialyl glycoforms.

Activated carbon prepared from waste coffee was utilized as a potential low-cost adsorbent to remove Rhodamine B from aqueous solution. A series of physical characterizations verify that the obtained activated carbon possesses a layered and ordered hexagonal structure with a wrinkled and rough surface. In addition, high specific surface area, appropriate pore distribution, and desired surface functional groups are revealed, which promote the adsorption properties. Various adsorption experiments were conducted to investigate the effect on the absorption capacity (e.g., of initial dye concentration, temperature and solution pH) of the material. The results showed that the waste-coffee-derived activated carbon with a large surface area of approximately 952.7 m2 g-1 showed a maximum uptake capacity of 83.4 mg g-1 at the pH of 7 with the initial dye concentration of 100 mg L-1 under 50°C. The higher adsorption capacity can be attributed to the strong electrostatic attraction between the negatively charged functional groups in activated carbon and the positively charged functional groups in RB. The kinetic data and the corresponding kinetic parameters were simulated to evaluate the mechanism of the adsorption process, which can fit well with the highest R2. The adsorption results confirmed the promising potential of the as-prepared waste-coffee-derived activated carbon as a dye adsorbent.

Fish fossils are only occasionally found in Taiwan, and such fossils are rarely appropriately analyzed and described. Despite their sparse records, several Plio-Pleistocene localities rich in marine organisms have yielded well-preserved specimens, potentially providing insight into the rarely identified fish fauna in the tropical-subtropical West Pacific. We describe a sandstone nodule containing fish skeletons from the Late Pleistocene Szekou Formation in southern Taiwan. The specimen includes nearly complete left jaws, fragmentary right jaws, and part of the anterior body. The distinct dentition of the specimen suggests it to be a member of Sparidae family. Further morphological analysis based on dentition and a comparison with 153 recent specimens belonging to 14 sparid species in the area enabled us to assign the fossil to the species Pagrus major. We found that the characteristic sparid tooth patterns are useful in generic determination, at least in Taiwan. The occurrence of the specimen is the first evidence of P. major in the region. Finally, the specialized tooth pattern and the estimated size indicate that the fish was a middle-to-top predator that fed on small fish and invertebrates in a neritic lagoonal environment.

Gaucher disease is a lysosomal storage disorder caused by mutations which destabilize the native folded form of GCase, triggering degradation and ultimately resulting in low enzyme activity. Pharmacological chaperones (PCs) which stabilize mutant GCase have been used to increase lysosomal activity through improving trafficking efficiency. By engineering their inherent basicity, we have synthesized PCs that change conformation between the ER and the lysosomal environment, thus weakening binding to GCase after its successful trafficking to the lysosome. NMR studies confirmed the conformational change while X-ray data reveal bound conformations and binding modes. These results were further corroborated by cell studies showing increases in GCase activity when using the pH-switchable probe at low dosing. Preliminary in vivo assays with humanized mouse models of Gaucher showed enhanced GCase activity levels in relevant tissues, including the brain, further supporting their potential.

Azido sugars have found frequent use as probes of biological systems in approaches ranging from cell surface metabolic labeling to activity-based proteomic profiling of glycosidases. However, little attention is typically paid to how well azide-substituted sugars represent the parent molecule, despite the substantial difference in size and structure of an azide compared to a hydroxyl. To quantitatively assess how well azides are accommodated, we have used glycosidases as tractable model enzyme systems reflecting what would also be expected for glycosyltransferases and other sugar binding/modifying proteins. In this vein, specificity constants have been measured for the hydrolysis of a series of azidodeoxy glucosides and N-acetylhexosaminides by a large number of glycosidases produced from expressed synthetic gene and metagenomic libraries. Azides at secondary carbons are not significantly accommodated, and thus, associated substrates are not processed, while those at primary carbons are productively recognized by only a small subset of the enzymes and often then only very poorly. Accordingly, in the absence of careful controls, results obtained with azide-modified sugars may not be representative of the situation with the natural sugar and should be interpreted with considerable caution. Azide incorporation can indeed provide a useful tool to monitor and detect glycosylation, but careful consideration should go into the selection of sites of azide substitution; such studies should not be used to quantitate glycosylation or to infer the absence of glycosylation activity.

An additional description of the Misol snake eel Yirrkala misolensis (Günther, 1872) is reported on the basis of 9 specimens collected from Dong-gang and Ke-tzu-liao, southwestern Taiwan. The species was previously reported from Indonesia and Australia and then extends northward to Taiwan and Japan, and was lacking adequate characterization on morphology. A detail description, fine condition of fresh photographs and 4 partial CO1 sequences are provided for the first time.

Gymnothorax poikilospilus sp. nov. is described based on two specimens collected from Penghu Islands, western Taiwan. It is a medium-sized brown moray that body covered with several rows of inconspicuous large dark brown patches on the back of body and dorsal fin. It has slightly elongated and arched jaws similar to the common characteristic of the genus Enchelycore Kaup, but the dentition supports it belongs to typical morays of the genus Gymnothorax Bloch. The new species can be distinguished from other similar Indo-Pacific brown morays by the combination of dentition, vertebral formula, and morphometric measurements. Molecular analyses based on 612 bp of mitochondrial COI gene also support it as a distinct species.

A new species of the congrid eel genus Bathycongrus is described on the basis of three specimens collected from the deep waters of eastern Taiwan. Bathycongrus melanostomus sp. nov., belongs to the few vertebrae species complex and is distinct in having a short and broad snout; a much reduced caudal fin; abdomen, mouth cavity and gill chamber blackish; small conical blunt teeth on vomer forming an elongate patch; total vertebrae 133-135, and total lateral-line pores 108-109.

Taiwan is one of the richest in the world in terms of eel fauna. In this study, we examined the osteological and morphological characteristics of eels under order Anguilliformes. Furthermore, we focused on the neurocranium of total of 30 Anguilliformes fishes under family Congridae (10), Muraenesocidae (1), Muraenidae (7), Nemichthyidae (1), Nettastomatidae (2), Ophichthidae (5), Synaphobranchidae (4), which are caught in Taiwanese waters. This paper shows the results of a comparative study on osteological characters of the neurocranium including the ratio of seven length characters using its NCL (neurocranium length), NCW (neurocranium width), OBL (orbit length), MFW (maximum frontal width), NCDB (neurocranium depth at basisphenoid), PEVW (premaxilla-ethmovomer width) and mPOBL (mid pre-orbital length), and 20 morphological diagnostic characters for 30 eel species. Results shows that species under family Nemichthyidae and Nettastomatidae have the highest values on the ratio of NCL/MFW, NCL/NCDB, and NCW/mPOBD. In morphological characters, it shows that species of the same family mostly share similar formation of the PEV plate and frontal structure. The usage of the length measurements and morphological diagnostic characters of neurocranium allowed for a more in depth understanding of how similar or different these eels can be. The neurocranial description and morphological characters may prove valuable for identification purposes and might be necessary tool for further studies on the status of order Anguilliformes.
